Describe the nature of colonial wars in the seventeenth century up to 1689. In what way s did the colonials and their indigenous approach warfare? Be sure to include material from readings and lectures in your answer.
Thoughts: The nature of war in the 17th century was one of complete destruction. The Europeans arrived with a sense that the land truly belonged to them. They justified the destruction of the indigenous by claiming moral and biological superiority.
So..... the answer to the first question is that the nature of the colonial wars were extremely brutal. The europeans arrived thinking that the indigenous were a stumbling block in their settlement of the new world. The indigenous were fighting for their survival and their lands.
The Europeans brought the idea of the feed fight to the new world from britain. The indigenous were proficient in terrorist raids. Neither party had qualms about killing women and children. Conflict was largely small scale because neither party had the capacity or the desire to field large armies, the indigenous because of sociatal constraints, and the europeans because of lack of personell. Both parties also were largely kept busy in other pursuits. The parties were involved first and foremost in providing for themselves, warfare was secondary.
